Key Players: His Worship, Dave Bronconnier

“We are excited that Calgary is home to the first children's museum west of Winnipeg, and that we are the only facility in Canada and possibly North America to combine science and the art of learning.

This facility will undoubtedly expose young people to creativity and co-operation in developing skills that will accompany them throughout their lives. We were proud to support the Creative Kids Museum application for the Centennial Per Capita Grant of 2.8 million, which they ultimately received in January of 2005, as Calgary's children are of the utmost importance to our future.”

- Mayor Dave Bronconnier

Following a successful career in private industry and nine years as Ward 6 Alderman on Calgary City Council, Dave Bronconnier was elected Calgary's 35th mayor on October 15, 2001. He was re-elected mayor of Calgary for a second term on October 18, 2004. Mayor Bronconnier has led significant initiatives in municipal infrastructure development, which include a well-received plan for the construction of major traffic interchanges and the extension of Calgary's light rail transit. This program includes a unique funding program that leverages the City's borrowing capacity without impacting property tax rates.

His commitment to addressing Calgary's infrastructure funding challenges helped secure an extension to the fuel tax revenue sharing agreement between the City and the province of Alberta. His efforts have earned him recognition as a leading national voice in favour of a more equitable share of federal fuel tax revenues for Canada's cities, culminating in an agreement that was signed in May 2005.

Inside City Hall, Mayor Bronconnier initiated a program to improve accountability among Council, the Executive and the Administration to ensure The City of Calgary continues to deliver quality service to Calgarians while ensuring the most prudent management of taxpayer resources.

Mayor Bronconnier has also been instrumental in facilitating partnerships with local homebuilders and other levels of government in funding affordable housing initiatives in new Calgary communities and continues to focus on programs that protect the abundant, but precious, environmental resources Calgarians enjoy.

As the driving force behind the restructuring of Calgary Economic Development, Mayor Bronconnier has reaffirmed Calgary's commitment to being a city of choice for international business and tourism.

Mayor Bronconnier is a third generation Calgarian. He and his wife Cindy have four children.
